Disney Selects J.J. Abrams for Star Wars Sequel

George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”

This is unbelievably good news for anyone who loves Star Wars.

Disney has made a bold and inspired choice here.  Abrams has spent the last decade establishing himself as the name in Hollywood Science Fiction.  Cloverfield, LOST, Super 8, Fringe, and yes — the best Star Trek movie since Wrath of Khan.  Bringing his attention to detail; his sublime knack at casting; and his ability to mix humor with action will ensure that the next Star Wars movie is in the debate with Empire and A New Hope as the best in the franchise.

Don't get hung up on the whole Star Wars vs Star Trek thing.  Joss Whedon jumped from Firefly to The Avengers.  Steven Spielberg jumped from Indiana Jones to Jurassic Park.  Hell, Abrams has already jumped from Mission Impossible to Star Trek.  A good director can make any project better, no matter how many other franchises he's helmed before.

This is the droid we're looking for.
